On Friday 10th October 2014, 13 new 'solicitors' made their first appearance at Haddington Sheriff Court, when members of the 1st Musselburgh Guide Unit decided to advocate about why #GirlsMatter. Ruth Gallacher, Associate in our Family Law Department and based at our Musselburgh office, is the Guider-in-Charge and she called upon Victoria Wilkinson, Partner in our Family Law Department and based at our Edinburgh office, to act as Sheriff to the budding solicitors.
The Guides aged between 10 and 14 had the opportunity to make a submission on one of two topics relevant to girls and women in today's society. For those tasked with playing devil's advocate this was not easy but the Guides did brilliantly. During their visit the Guides had the opportunity to visit the cells, try on gowns and a wig which helped them get into character.
Girlguiding has a huge social media campaign at the moment which is consistent with other organisations around the World, seeking to encourage girls and women to speak out about issues which matter to them. The visit to the court tied in with this campaign and will also be used as a stepping stone for when the Guides complete their Free Being Me badge which looks at self-esteem and body image. The Guides who attended will have benefited immensely from the experience.
A huge thanks to Mrs Lowe at Haddington Sheriff Court for facilitating the visit.
