The Home Office’s recent ‘statement of changes’, which was published on 10 September 2021, made several changes to the Immigration Rules, including rebranding the T5 (Temporary Worker) Youth Mobility Scheme to the simplified Youth Mobility Scheme.
The Youth Mobility Scheme is open to individuals, who are nationals of specific countries, aged between 18 and 30 who want to live and work in the UK. It is only possible to obtain a visa under the Youth Mobility Scheme once.
The Home Office in its ‘statement of changes’ confirmed that from 1 January 2022, India and Iceland will be added to the list of countries whose nationals are eligible to apply under the Youth Mobility Scheme. It further confirmed that 3,000 initial places will be allocated to India, while 1,000 places will be allocated to Iceland.
Indian nationals looking to apply under the scheme will be required to use the Home Office’s ballot process, similar to the situation for other countries, such as Japan and South Korea. Indian nationals must also meet the additional evidential requirement of either having an academic qualification equal to or above RQF Level 6, namely a UK Bachelor’s degree with honours, or, a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a skilled role as listed at Appendix Skilled Occupations.
