On 14th July 2025, the Government announced that it has resumed decision-making on Syrian asylum claims following a temporary pause that began in December 2024.
The Government had taken the decision in December 2024 to pause all Syrian asylum interviews and decisions, including decisions on settlement protection applications from Syrian nationals, as a result of the fall of the Assad regime. The Government’s position was that it was necessary to pause consideration of such applications as there was “no stable, objective information available to make robust assessments of risk on return to Syria”.
The Government, with the above in mind, proceeded to publish updated country information on Syria in the form of Country Policy Information Notes (‘CPINs’). A total of seven CPINs were published on the GOV.uk website on 14th July 2025.
These CPINS cover the following:
- Alawites and actual or perceived Assadists
- Humanitarian situation
- Kurds and Kurdish areas
- Military service
- Religious minorities
- Returnees after the fall of Al-Assad regime
- Security situation
On the same day as the updated CPINs were published, the Home Office resumed decision-making on Syrian asylum claims and settlement applications (including from those Syrian nationals who had been brought to the UK under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme). The information contained within the CPINs is to be considered by Home Office decision makers when processing asylum claims and when undertaking safe return reviews as part of the consideration of settlement protection applications.
