Following the expiry of Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) at the end of 2024 and the introduction of eVisas for most visa holders, the deadline to use BRPs and Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) for the purpose of international travel is 1 June 2025.
Travelling after 1 June 2025
From 1 June, visa holders should use their eVisa to travel to the UK alongside their current and valid passport. The Home Office advises that, prior to travelling, visa holders should get a share code to prove immigration status. The share code is valid for a period of 90 days and can be checked by the carrier, such as the airline.
Travellers should ensure their passport is linked to their UKVI account and the details contained in their eVisa and UKVI account are correct. Read our blog post on ensuring your UK evisa is current and correct before travelling outside the UK.
Who needs an eVisa?
You need an eVisa if the Home Office has given you permission to stay in the UK for more than 6 months or you have indefinite leave to remain.
How you access your eVisa will depend upon whether you have been issued a BRP.
What if there is a problem accessing an eVisa while travelling?
Until recently, there was a Home Office passenger helpline for those unable to demonstrate their permission to travel to the carrier. The Home Office closed the passenger support helpline on 31 March 2025. The Home Office now advises that If a carrier is unable to check a person’s permission to travel then the carrier should contact the UK Border Force Carrier Support Hub.
