On 1 September 2025, the UK Government announced that the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) Scheme was to be extended by an additional 24 months, following the initial 18-month grant period. This means that individuals applying to the Scheme can now receive up to three and half years’ permission in total.
On 24 February 2026, the UK Government confirmed that individuals applying to the Scheme will be able to apply up to 90 days before their current Ukraine Scheme permission expires. This marks a shift from current UK Government policy, in which applicants can apply up to 28 days before their current permission expires.
The UK Government is yet to confirm when the new 90-day period will come into force, and so for now the 28-day limit continues to apply. Further details are expected to be published in due course.
The UK Government has confirmed that submitting an early application within the 90-day period will not reduce the total permission granted. Rather, any remaining permission on an applicant’s current status will be added to the new period of permission if the application is successful.
