David graduated from Aberdeen University having obtained his LL.B in 1979. He moved to Edinburgh later that year to take up his apprenticeship with Messrs A & W. M. Urquhart.

Having qualified as a Solicitor with A & W. M. Urquhart David joined Drummond & Co. W.S.( now Drummond Miller LLP) as an Assistant in June 1984 and after a spell running the firm's former branch office at Penicuik in 1987/88 transferred to the firm's Musselburgh Office in May 1988 and was assumed as a Partner in that year. After 18 years in Musselburgh David has been based again at Moray Place since September 2006.

David is a general practitioner primarily covering Residential Conveyancing and Wills and Executries . He also oversees the process of selecting the firm's Trainees and is a Writer to the Signet and Notary Public.
